Sun, Steel, and Safety: The Role of UL-2703 in Solar Racking Installations

Over the last 10 years, Solar Mounts LLC has established itself as a trusted name in the commercial and utility-scale solar racking space by delivering robust, reliable, and scalable solar solutions. Each structure is engineered for longevity, dependability, and tailored site-specific performance, combining efficiency with aesthetics to deliver a solar structure that truly stands the test of time.

A key component of SMLLC’s commitment to safety and quality is its rigorous adherence to UL 2703 certification standards. Administered by CSA Group, UL 2703 solar carports, shade structures, and ground mounts from Solar Mounts LLC has been evaluated and tested in grounding, bonding, and mechanical loading. All of Solar Mounts LLC’s solar racking and mounting solutions are built with UL 2703 compliant components, ensuring that every element, from brackets and clamps to modules and structural connections, is properly bonded and grounded to minimize electrical risks and maintain a safe, reliable operating environment for years to come.

However, what sets Solar Mounts LLC apart is how we achieved our UL 2703 certification. Most solar racking manufacturers stop short at the minimum, testing only for grounding and/or bonding compliance. These are essential safety features but are easier and significantly cheaper to achieve than full mechanical load testing; we went further. Working alongside CSA, SMLLC conducted testing using some of the largest PV modules commercially available, up to 34 square feet in area. We didn’t limit ourselves to just one type of module, either. Our UL 2703 certification process included mechanical and electrical testing across Type 1, Type 2, and Type 29 (glass-on-glass) modules, covering the full range of module architectures used in the field today.

In addition to passing grounding and bonding evaluations, Solar Mounts LLC successfully passed the mechanical load testing requirements, which many competitors avoid due to the cost and complexity. These tests simulate real-world stresses such as snow loads, high winds, and long-term pressure across module frames and mounting hardware. This achievement confirms that SMLLC’s structures and racking systems perform under pressure; literally. Many solar racking providers do not mention UL 2703, and even among those who do, few have achieved full mechanical certification. Solar Mounts LLC’s commitment to full-system safety testing reflects a deeper engineering mindset and an unwillingness to cut corners.

We engineer and design our structures to be code compliant, inspection ready, and installer friendly. By offering fully UL 2703-certified solar structures, SMLLC gives project developers, EPCs, and property owners peace of mind knowing their system is built for both performance and protection. As the demand for high-capacity solar systems and sustainable infrastructure accelerates, Solar Mounts LLC continues to lead the industry with designs that are rigorously tested, structurally sound, and built to the highest standard of safety.
