Solar carport systems from Solar Mounts LLC serve a dual purpose by producing power while providing shaded, weather-protected parking. That combination of energy generation and everyday utility makes them one of the smartest renewable investments for schools, businesses, and municipalities alike. Thanks to the help of Solar Power World, we got the chance to highlight an impressive 1.03 MW solar carport installed last summer at Ridgefield High School in Connecticut. The system’s integration within the school and town network highlights just how flexible and scalable solar carport infrastructure can be. From optimizing on-site energy use to taking advantage of incentive programs, solar carport systems can be engineered to fit a wide range of project needs.
Solar carports offer overhead protection to vehicles and pedestrians from the hazards associated with ice and snow runoff, hail, rough winds, and more. Not only that, but they also provide long-term financial and environmental benefits. Ridgefield’s new system is expected to save the district about $1.5 million over 25 years while producing more than 1,300,000 kWh of clean energy annually, enough to power almost 100 homes with electricity that’s eco-friendly and sustainably sourced. With a lifespan of 30+ years, these carports will continue generating reliable solar power while offsetting over 700,000 lbs. of carbon emissions each year.
Projects like Ridgefield demonstrate exactly why carports are gaining momentum nationwide: they make better use of space, deliver measurable returns, and support a cleaner future.
